Boasting a history stretching back to the turn of the 20th century, the Australian Open is Australia’s biggest tennis tournament and one of the world’s most renowned majors. Played in January each year, it is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events and represents the major season opener. Played on the iconic blue hard-courts against a Melbourne cityscape backdrop. It’s small surprise that Australian Open draws crowds in excess of 700,000!
The 2017 edition of the Australian Open was arguably one of the greatest in the Tournament’s long and storied history! The Melbourne Park grounds were completely refreshed and revamped; with more activities, things to see and do and live music than ever before! The result was an incredible festival atmosphere that improved upon what was already one of the most electric in world sport! The on-court action was what really made 2017 a year to remember though, with plenty of shock results (including the defending Men’s & Women’s Singles Champions, Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber being knocked out in the 2nd and 4th rounds respectively!), some truly thrilling matches and what was perhaps the two most highly anticipated Finals in the Tournament’s history! It doesn’t get much better than Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams vs Venus Williams!
Staged annually on the last fortnight of January at Melbourne Park, Victoria since 1988, the Australian Open is the first Grand Slam® tennis tournament of the calendar year. Second only to the US Open in terms of attendance, the Australian Open is undisputedly Australia’s biggest and most popular sporting event. Played on iconic bright blue Plexicushion hard courts, the Australian Open’s biggest matches take place in Melbourne Park’s three main stadiums – Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Hisense Arena.
